Electric Charge

Concept Explanation

Electric Charge

The atoms are made of protons neutrons and electrons. The positively charged particles in an atom are called protons. The negatively charged particles are called electrons. The atom as a whole consist of an equal number of positive and negative charges, and in such a case of the atom is said to be electrically neutral. A body is said to be negatively charged if it gains electrons that is electrons are more in number than protons. and is said to be positively charged if it looses electrons  that is protons are more in number than electrons.

If two objects having the same type of charge are brought close together, they repel each other (i.e. push each other away) however if the two objects having the opposite type of charge. (positive- negative or negative-positive), they attract each other. Therefore, we can say, like charges repel each other and unlike charges attract each other

An electric charge is one of the fundamental properties of matter that determines its electric and magnetic properties. The smallest and the most elementary charge is the charge of 1 electron. The SI unit of charge is coulomb.

An electron has a charge of 1.6 times 10^{-19};;Coulomb (C).

No object can have a charge less than the charge of 1 electron. Thus, a charge of 0.5 times 10^{-19};;Coulomb (C)  or 1.6 times 10^{-20};;Coulomb (C)

is not possible. The charge on a body will always be a multiple of the charge of an electron. Hence, the charge of an electron s also called the fundamental charge.

To calculate Charge(q) we will use the number of electrons and the charge of one electron

q= ne

Where q is the charge

n is the number of elctrons and

e is the charge of one electron.

Illustration: Calculate the charge when 10 electrons are passing.

Solution:  Given,

n = 10,

e= 1.6 times 10^{-19};;Coulomb (C),

we have to calculate the charge q=?

q= ne

   = 10 X 1.6 times 10^{-19};;Coulomb (C)

  =16 times 10^{-19};;Coulomb (C)

 =1.6 times 10^{-18};;Coulomb (C)
